How to multiply a total cost by a fraction in word excel 2007?

hey guys im having trouble on word excel 2007 on how to multiply a total cost by a percentage eg. $5.15*40% in cell form it would be =D6*E4 .. E4 being the percentage of 40% please help me its been driving me crazy, muchly appreciated.
