Is memorizing poetry a good way to lengthen your memory?

I memorized the whole of Henry V Act I once... and have memorized numerous poems only to forget them within months. My memory is still terrible, so I don't think it's a good way. It may strength your ability to memorize things well and quickly in a short space of time, but length? Nope :(
