Reading about philosophy/politics...?

I highly recommend Bertrand Russell's History of Western Philosophy. It is quite a large tome (800 pages), but it contains a discussion of the most influential philosophers and their most important ideas, starting in ancient times and going right through to the first half of the 20th century.
